Grocery Shop Today

I can't believe that it is August 1 already.  The summer flew by.  Dh started inservice this morning so life is back to "normal".  Of course "normal" is different now as I am no longer working outside of the home.

Ok so this is grocery shopping day.  I hit three stores this morning and will go to one later today.  So far,

Aldi
2 24 packs of bottled water
4 loaves of white bread
2 bags of veggie straws
1 bottle of basil
1 box of quart size freezer bags

Total:  $14.41

Gordon Food Service
1 2L diet pepsi
1 2 pound bag of nectarines

Total:  $4.18

Rite Aid
11 bottles of lemon ice tea

Total:  $4.39

Total so far:  $22.98
Left to spend:  $77.02

I like to start at Aldi as it is the furthest from my home.  Veggie straws were a great find as they are $3.00 on sale at Kroger.  With dh going back to work we will go through much more bread and he will only take white bread.  Gordon is right next store so I popped in there to look at their specials.  Didn't see a lot of only two items left with me.  Had to go to Rite Aid to pick up meds and saw these marked down to 37 cents each.  Normally $1.49 each.  Saved $12.32.

I will be going to Kroger after lunch and then I will post that and my menus.

Weekend shopping

So over the weekend I went to the store to pick up a few things that dh said I forgot ....  mainly chips. Heaven forbid I forget snacks.

Kroger:
2 bags wavy chips
1 container fried onion pieces
1 bag sugar free Halls

total:  $7.25

The fried onion pieces is for a casserole I was taking to a funeral.  I buy them maybe once every 5 years.  I had a hard time finding them and boy have they gone up in price.  I got the smallest container they had.

Then yesterday we drove to dh's school to pack up his classroom as he is changing schools and we stayed longer then planned.  Ended up buying some drinks as we were hurting.

Gas Station:

2 diet Pepsi

total:  $2.75

Total left:  $10.00

Grocery Shop

Today was payday therefore today is ........ grocery shopping day !!!!

Four store shop this week.  First off .....

Farmer's Market - cantaloupe - $3  The lady I was going to buy beets from today to make pickled beets was not there so I looked around to see what looked amazing and this cantaloupe jumped into my basket !!  lol no not quite.  A lovely lady was passing out samples and it tasted great.  Nice and juicy so home one came.

Sam's Club - $26.16   I go to Sam's Club about every 3 to 4 months as it is the other side of town.  However, I needed toilet paper and ketchup so off I went.  The toilet paper was on sale for $2 off which was great.  I also got a box of 6 1 pound packages of garden rotini to make pasta salad with.  It was $1.25 off regular retail.  I also got my can of ketchup.

Aldi's - $13.30  Aldi's is not far from Sam's Club so I decided to pop in there and see what they had on my list.  I got:  2 loaves of bread, 3 dozen eggs, 2 bags salad mix, 1 box dog biscuits, 4 pounds of sugar, 2 pounds of carrots and a package of deli sliced cheese.  Not bad really.  The eggs were 59 cents a dozen.

Kroger - $43.96  Last but not least is my regular stop.  Here is what I got:  3 roll package of paper towels, 3 bottles diet ginger ale, 2 bottles salad dressing, 1 container iced tea mix, 1 box frozen waffles, 1 bag of turkey burgers, 1 bag frozen stir-fry veggies, 1 bag pizza cheese, 2 packages sliced cheese, 1 pound lunch meat, 1 pounds butter, 4 baking potatoes,1 package mushrooms, 1.89 pounds of green grapes, 1 box sweetener, 1 bag potato chips, 2 packages hamburger buns 1 box brillo pads, 1 bottles dish soap, 1 can of sliced mushrooms, 1 can sliced black olives and 1 snicker bar.  I thought I did good.  I saved 38% or $25.61 and double fuel points.  I was hungry so the snicker bar.  Next time I will plan better.  Dh is not feeling well so the ginger ale.

I have spent $86.42.

I have $20 in cash left to last until July 29.  I should be able to do it.

Garden News ....

We plant a garden every year for the last 20 and this year was no exception.  We started with kale and broccoli in the spring.  We had our best year ever !!!!  I was able to harvest broccoli four times and the kale was finally pulled and frozen after eating it everyday for weeks.  I later found out I could have just cut it back and it would have come back in the fall.  We will try that next year.

Then we planted peas, beans, cucumbers, zucchini and yellow squash.  We had a better year with the peas.  Was able to pick enough a couple of times for meals for dh and I.  The beans did okay.  Enough to can about 4 pints before dying early.  I have a good friendship with a vendor at the farmers market and I have been able to get more green beans at a good price.  The zucchini and yellow squash did well until July 1 and then the heat got to it I think.  Dh has pulled all of the plants out already and we have harvested what we are going to for this year.  That leaves what we planted last - tomatoes and peppers.  I wait all year for the first tomato and relish it.  We plant rapanzels this year and they are delicious !!!!!  Can't wait for them to ripen soon I hope.

We are trying to figure out what to plant this fall.  Thinking carrots and beets.  Maybe some lettuce.  Our weather is such that last year I was still picking peppers in November.  I think we may need to plan better in the spring in order to have seeds for the fall garden.

Change is in the wind ......

My place of employment closed on April 25 and I am now going to the next closest store to help them close starting this week.  That will be 6 to 8 weeks as I am not sure when dh wants to take vacation in June.

The idea right now is for me to stay home and work on my craft/sewing business.  This will mean corners will need to be cut deeply.  Every bill will need to be assessed as to the need and the cost.  First off will be food and utilities.  I am going to look in budget billing to help with the monthly budget.  Food will mean eating from the deep freeze more in anticipation of the summer garden.  I harvested my first broccoli crop yesterday.  I also need to count my home canned goods that are still left to figure out what I need to process and what I have lots of.

I will be planning a yard sale and looking to put items on eBay and Etsy.  Lots to do and not a lot of time to finish it.  When I plan my menu I will post it here later.

Life has been crazy ....

Boy when life gets crazy I forget to blog.  Been working a lot of hours and not really meal planning the way I should.  We are still averaging $50 to $75 a week in food and I need to lower that.  Hope fully will get to concentrate on it soon.

I Made a Mistake ....

I sent hubby to the grocery store.  He had a list and did okay with the list but then added a few things.  On the list was:  salad stuff, baking chips, ritz crackers and rice mix.  He came home with:

1 bag salad mix
1 cucumber
2 nectarines
1 bag radishes
2 small tomatoes
1 box ritz crackers
1 box rice mix
2 bags baking chips
1 bag potato chips
1 giant candy bar

Total spent:  $15.38
Left for the month:   $136.67

The rice mix was free and I had a coupon for the ritz crackers.  The baking chips were 59 cents per bag.

I will be more careful in the future sending hubby when he is hungry to the store.  As in I will try to not do it.  ~smile~

Next Stop

The next stop on my grocery shopping day was Kroger.  The fuel points really help with the cost of gas so I buy some items here.

Today's purchase:

1 box kitchen garbage bags
1 pkg bar soap
2 jars of peanut butter
1 box Keurig tea
2 pkgs slice cheese
1 pkg bologna
1 pkg hot dogs
1 pound carrots
2 pkgs baking chips
1 bottle Sunny D
3 bananas
1 loaf bread
1 pkg hot dog buns
1 pkg hamburger buns

Total:  $26.95
Total for month:  $47.95
Left for February:  $152.05

The Sunny D was free and the baking chips were 59 cents each bag.  I was going to buy chocolate chips but they were $2 a bag.

My February Starts Today ....

Today is payday and so my next month's grocery budget starts today.  My goal is to spend $200 for the month.  This includes toiletries and pet food also.

This morning I went to JR's which is a little mom and pop grocery store in town that has the best meat in town.  They run weekly meat specials and I go when I see a really good one.  Today they had boston pork butt roasts for 98 cents a pound.  We love pulled pork so I went to see what they had.

So this morning I spent:

3 dozen large eggs - $3
cabbage -                 73 cents
pork chops    -          $4.62
boston butt -             $18.60
candy bar  -             88 cents

Total:      $30.01

The eggs where an unadvertised special and I grabbed what they had on the shelf.  The pork chops were marked down and I was able to divide it into three meals.  The candy bar was a treat as this is the only store in town that carries O Henry bars and I loved these as a kid.  The boston butt was over 18 pounds and I had them divide it into four smaller roasts.  Enough for February and March.  Maybe even into April. ~smile~  So really $9 of this is for March's food budget.

When I remove the amount for next months budget I spent $21 therefore I have $179 left for the month.

I will be going to complete my shopping this afternoon.

Wow it has been a while !!!

Life has been crazy and blogging took a back seat.  I have been working more hours and started a side business.

However, this is the year to concentrate on debt reduction so back to pinching those pennies.  I did a large shop on December 31 but dh and I decided to count that as last year and to start fresh with the grocery numbers so this first partial week of the year I have spent the following:

Kroger:

1 tub ice cream
1 bottle cough syrup
Spent:  $5.96

Dh is sick and that is what he wanted.

Jr's Foodland:

2.27 pounds of cabbage
1 pkg chicken tenders
2 pkgs  pork chops
1 small roast
1.10 pound ground meat
1 candy bar
1 half dozen eggs
1 bag shredded pizza cheese
2 boxes Andres mints
Spent: $28.62

Jr has the best meat in town.  5 meals of meat for $20.

So far this month I have spent $34.58.  More than I wanted too but we have enough meat for the month now.  ~smile~

I am working on my menu for the next two weeks.  I will post when they are done.
